A Divergent Look at "Bad" Cards in the Tarot
A lot of cards in the tarot illicit impressions from people. Many of them, like the 10 of Cups or the Lovers are renowned for their good tidings but other cards have such a bad reputation that many are scared silly by them. This blog post covers the top three cards in the tarot that people consider bad.
Death
With his scythe and pale horse the figure of Death is a card that makes many people pause. Many books and online sources are quick to stress that this card is about change. And yes, that’s true. Death is a good indicator of change to come. Long term change that we can see coming for some time.
On the other hand, death can be just that…death. Granted, the only times I’ve had it come up as death were in response to reading clients who were going through active hospice care. But the overall point is that change can be scary and while undergoing a massive shift we encounter aspects of ourselves and our lives that need attention.
The Tower
Lightning crashes and the tower comes crashing down. The tower is one of those cards that people feel point to a mistake, something terrible coming their way, but the card indicates that this change, again, is absolutely necessary. That’s a theme that ties the two big change cards together. You can try to avoid them but often the best route is to trudge through them. In this case, pick up the bricks and start building yet again.
10 of Swords
The final card to look at is the 10 of Swords. This card to me indicates a drastic event that we neither saw coming nor want around. We can sometimes avoid this if we are careful. Another aspect I see is the idea of the a backstabbing. Maybe a little literal but it happens. The moment the 10 of Swords appears it can be a message to be cautious and aware of things around you before they go haywire. If you’re in the midst of those massive turmoil moments then the 10 of Swords can be a sign that you’re reaching the end of that particular scenario. The ten is the last in line and represents an ending and a new beginning.
